Darwen crash victim no longer ‘critical’

A MAN seriously injured after being hit by a car has been moved from critical care after showing signs of improvement.

Jamie Banks, of Hampden Avenue, Darwen, seriously injured his head and leg after he was struck as he crossed Bolton Road outside the Spinners pub on Friday night.

The 23-year-old underwent three hours of surgery to remove a blood clot on the brain and has also had an operation on fractures to his leg.

He remains unconscious.

His sister Natalie said: “He might not have woken up today, but we’ve taken some big steps forward.

“He’s now out of critical care and in high dependency on the neurological ward where he is being well looked after.

"He’s completely off all the monitors now and is much more settled after the op on his leg.”

I dont know jamie personally but i would just like to offer my best wishes as i was also run over 3 years ago on bolton road, i am left paralysed due to the accident and when i read this story i was very very angry as bolton road from the town centre to the 24 hour garage is notorious for speeding drivers and something needs to be done, i was left for dead if it had not been for a good samaritan who turned out to be a nurse i would be dead, or are the council waiting for someone to be killed before they put up a speed camera, i hope jamie gets well soon and i am hoping to get a petition going as soon as possible to make the stretch between the town centre and the 24 hour garage a lot safer. get well soon jamie x

It's a tragic shame that it had to happen to anyone but it was only a matter of time outside that pub... It's located just after a bend on a road where 30 seems to be the minimum speed limit, that section also has poor lighting and mixed with the sorts of people that frequent the spinners on a weekend spilling out onto the pavement and road and running out across the road in front on oncoming traffic into waiting taixs, you have a bad combination. On top of all that you then have the large number of drink drivers that pile out of the car park and onto the roads which the local Police seem oblivious to, despite the dozens of cars parked up all night until closing time (unless everyone has suddenly become a thoughtful designated driver - which I doubt it in there!)

A real shame but I really fear it won't be the last...
