TWO women were taken to hospital after a fire started in a bedroom of a house.

Three fire crews from Blackburn and Hyndburn attended Whalley New Road, Blackburn, at 9pm last night.

Fire crew manager John Riley said the fire had been found in one of the bedrooms and had been put out by the two women with buckets of water.

He said: "The family were alerted to the fire by a smoke alarm, the two female occupants who extinguished the fire were taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation.

"The fire service was in attendance for an hour and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

"Always have a working smoke alarm in your property, on this occasion it worked and alerted the family to the fire.

"We do not recommend that you don’t try and extinguish fires in a property, the two hospitalised occupants took in a lot of smoke and were obviously in distress.

"Our advice is to leave the property and once outside phone for the fire service."
