CHARITY bosses have been left reeling after a spate of break-ins at dog rescue centres across Pendle.

Vandals smashed windows and trashed rooms at two different charities in the last few months causing misery for volunteers who are left cleaning up the mess.

In the latest incident Pendle Dogs in Need’s reception area in Elizabeth Street, Nelson, was broken into on Monday night.

It comes after a reported five break-ins at the Sibes and Sled Dogs Husky Rescue in Greenfield Road, Barrowford, over the last three to four months.

Sharon Ashley, manager at Pendle Dogs in Need, said it was the second time the window has been smashed in the last few weeks.

She said: “They did not take anything. There is a lot of mess and the glass went everywhere but they did not manage to get into our main building.

“I have no idea what they were looking for but we keep very little money in the building.

“It makes us feel angry that anybody would target a charity. We scrape every pound we make.

“We know it has happened to another rescue centre. It is like they are targeting us deliberately.

“It causes chaos. We need to get someone to repair the window and reset the alarm as well as spend time cleaning glass off all of the items that are to be sold at our auctions.”

Steve Moss, from Sibes and Sled, said their static caravan which is used as a welfare unit had been targeted five times in the last three or four months.

He said they are now planning to get rid of it.

“The first couple of times they prised the windows open then they started smashing them,” he said.

“They just trash it and chuck everything all over and take things like tea bags or coffee.

“It really gets us down.It is soul-destroying. We are a charity and give our free time and then this happens.”

He said in the latest incident a wildlife camera caught two figures looking through the window - one holding a crowbar.

A Lancashire Police spokesman said they were aware of the incidents and urged anyone with information to call police on 101.
