A DISQUALIFIED driver who collided with a horse and carriage on Blackpool promenade in August 2016 gave false details to police.

Blackburn magistrates heard justice had eventually caught up with Mohammed Qasim Malik for the motoring offences but police were now investigating the possibility that he had perverted the course of justice.

Malik, 25, of Bastwell Road, Blackburn, pleaded guilty to disqualified driving, driving with excess alcohol and without insurance in Blackpool and failing to provide a specimen for analysis, driving without insurance and without due care and attention in Blackburn on Sunday.

He was sentenced to 14 weeks in prison suspended for 18 months, banned from driving for 40 months, ordered to do 20 days rehabilitation activity requirement and pay £170 costs and £115 victim surcharge.

Catherine Allan, prosecuting, said after colliding with a horse and carriage outside The Manchester pub on the promenade the carriage driver removed the car keys to stop Malik driving off. When police arrived he gave a false names, date of birth and address.

"The matter will now be investigated by the police," she said.

The Blackburn offences occurred at 12.35 am when police saw Malik pull out of a queue at a set of temporary traffic lights and overtook other vehicles in the queue before going through the lights on red. He went through another red light without slowing or stopping.

"At the police station he sucked through the mouthpiece rather than blowing and was deemed to have failed to provide.

Jonathan Taylor, defending, said following the incident in Blackpool Malik had panicked and gave false details.

"Ultimately everything has caught up with him," said Mr Taylor. "He is trying to get his life in order and has been accepted for training with the RAF in September although these matters may jeopardise that."
