CALLS to repair a ‘dangerous’ road which has begun ‘crumbling away’ have been dismissed by Lancashire County Council.

Cllr Christine White, who represents the Rosehill with Burnley Wood area on Burnley Council, has tried to improve the condition of Reed Street, after receiving several complaints from residents.

Cllr White said the road, which links Kirkgate and Springfield Road, has been blighted with erosion and the asphalt has started to come away.

Highway bosses said they had carried out minor repairs but wouldn’t be revisiting the road because it ‘does not pose a safety risk’ in its current condition.

But officers said they would be monitoring the problem.

Cllr White said the county council wouldn’t repair the roads because the damage holes ‘were not deep enough’.

She said: “The road has been a problem for a long time now and it’s getting on people’s nerves.

“I have had lots of residents ask me about fixing it because eventually it will start to damage cars and cause accidents.

“The asphalt is coming lose, its dangerous.

“The council told me the holes are not big enough to be classed as potholes because they are not deep enough, but the road is so bad it needs to be fixed.”

A county council survey said that in 2014, 30.75 per cent of A, B and C roads needed maintenance in Lancashire.

However by 2016 the figure had reduced to 28 per cent.

A spokesman for Lancashire County Council said: “We carried out an inspection of Reed Street in June after receiving a report about damage to the surface from Councillor White via the Report It website.

“One actionable defect was repaired, and we found some further minor damage to the road surface.

“However this does not pose a safety risk and is not at the level where we will carry out a repair.

“We will continue to monitor Reed Street, with the next routine safety inspection due to take place in April 2017.

“Our approach of using survey data to target maintenance at the right time in the lifecycle of a road has resulted in an overall improvement to the condition of roads in Burnley since 2014.”
