A MAN is ‘very lucky to be alive’ after being hit by a car outside a Burnley shop, suffering serious head injuries.

Police said a man in his 30s was hit by a Vauxhall Corsa near the Famous Shop convenience store in Yorkshire Street, at 8.50pm on Sunday. The man was taken to Royal Preston Hospital by ambulance.

Police said the Vauxhall driver, an 18-year-old man, did not suffer any serious injuries and had stopped at the scene. Officers said yesterday that no arrests have been made.

Cllr Gary Frayling, who represents the area on the borough council, said: “The man is very lucky to be alive considering the dangers of being hit by a moving car.

“I was shocked to hear there had been an accident because it’s not a well known spot, neither is it a particularly dangerous spot to cross the road.

“However, it shows that nowhere is completely safe and we must always be careful when near roads. I do hope the man is okay and is out of hospital as soon as possible.”

An eyewitness, who was in the Turf Hotel pub at the time, said the man was lying by a cash machine near the shop and there was a lot of emergency vehicles nearby.

The eyewitness said: “The man was lying down on the floor and there was a lot of people outside.

“There was around nine police cars and an ambulance.

“Everyone was worried about what was going to happen to the man and if he was going to be okay.”

A police spokesman said Yorkshire Street was closed for several hours from the roundabout at Church Street and the Belvedere Road junction.

He said: “The man suffered serious, but not life-threatening, head injuries and was taken to Royal Preston Hospital.

“The road was closed and traffic was diverted until midnight when the road was reopened.

“ An investigation is being made into the circumstances of how the incident happened.

“If anyone has any information about what happened they are urged to call the police on 101 and quote log number 1421 of October 2.”
