For sale sign goes up at closed Haslingden swim pool

Lancashire Telegraph: Haslingden Pool could still be considered for leisure, from gym to a dance studio, concert venue or bingo hall Haslingden Pool could still be considered for leisure, from gym to a dance studio, concert venue or bingo hall

A FOR sale sign has been erected outside Haslingden Pool - seven months since the 78-year-old venue was controversially closed down.

New operators could still consider the East Bank Avenue building for leisure use - from a gym to a dance studio, concert venue or bingo hall.

But borough council bosses say that either a residential or retail use could be considered for the site, as they invite offers to take it off the authority’s hands.

Coun Gladys Sandiford, who represents Greenfield ward, said there had been initial fears that the land may become a supermarket - to the concern of neighbours.

She added: “I think of all the choices a private residential development would be the most preferable.

“It is in a very sought-after area but it would have to be something which did not attract too much traffic. That was one of the problems we used to have with the baths.”

Coun Greenfield said that feelings were still ‘running high’ over the loss of the pool, with the town’s swimming club having to relocate to Marl Pits at Rawtenstall and bathers facing similar journeys.

Land of around three-quarters of an acre is incorporated into the sale, with 23 garages to the rear of the pool building and a sub-station also included.

Prospective buyers are being told that they would have to submit a planning application within one month of making any purchase, which can be made with or without the garages area.

And then the sale would need to be completed within one month of any planning permission being obtained. Bids must be lodged with by noon on Friday, August 15.
