TWO Todmorden schools could be rebuilt if plans for a £7.5million investment are given the go ahead.

Calderdale Council’s cabinet committee was expected to rubber-stamp the proposals for Todmorden High and Ferney Lee Primary School last night.

Once planning permission is approved work could start this summer.

A study was carried out by Langtry Langton Architects to look at the options available for improvements to the two schools.

Stuart Smith, the council’s children and young peoples service director, said: “Todmorden High School is in poor condition and requires rebuilding.

“The proposed option is to site a new contemporary building at the centre front of the current site and demolish the modular building used for English teaching and the riverside block which is subject to flooding.

“Future development on the site, when funding becomes available, would link in to this signature building.”

Work at Todmorden High would cost around £4.25million.

Mr Smith said: “Ferney Lee is a Victorian school with a 1960s block attached.

“During the feasibility assessment, there was an alternative option to completely demolish the old school and provide a new modern facility on the land behind the current building.

“It is clear that, with some additional investment, a new, much more efficient building can be provided on the Ferney Lee site.

“This option has the advantage that more of the revenue funding generated by the pupil numbers will be spent on teaching and learning rather than the high running costs of a refurbished building.”

The work at Ferney Lee will cost around £3.22million.
