A SHORT film featuring the talents of youngsters from across Burnley has been bridging the generation gap ahead of the borough's remembrance services.

Students from four schools teamed up with Calico Creative, an arm of the borough housing agency, to pull together 'Memories', a digital animation designed to bring home the sacrifices made during two world wars.

The cartoon features 'cut-out' characters dreamed up by the pupils, based around a young boy's conversation with his grandmother about her wartime recollections.

Now the mini-masterpiece has been made available to primary school teachers across Lancashire and beyond, for use with four to seven-year-olds.

Young people from St Leonard's Primary in Padiham, Cherry Fold Primary, Hameldon Community College and Sir John Thursby Community College all contributed to the finished work, taking turns in fashioning the sound-track and animation seq-uences.

Their efforts were aided by conversations with senior citizens, with assistance from education advisor Kay Lord, BBC scriptwriter John Warburton and broadcaster designer Sarah Rees..

Kelly Fort, of Calico Creative, said: “It's been an amazing experience and has been completely driven by the children taking part.

“The whole idea of remembrance is hard for youngsters to grasp, but the children involved have really brought it to life. Working with Kay Lord, we know we have created something that really makes sense for primary age children.”

The short film is available to teachers through www.personclub.co.uk, a new digital initiative which will undertake similar work on other themes in future.
