BATTLE lines have been drawn over a proposed takeaway which has divided residents and traders in a Burnley surburb.

More than 260 people have signed a petition objecting to Mohammed Khan’s plans to convert the former Belvoir lettings office in Rosegrove Lane into a late-night eaterie.

But the bid has been backed by Rosegrove Action Group and nearly 50 letters in support of the takeaway, which would open from teatime to 11pm.

The final decision will be taken by councillors sitting on Burnley Council’s development control committee tonight, with the plans recommended for approval by planning experts.

Stephen Berkins, who runs an award-winning butchers next to the takeaway site, said: “I would prefer a proper shop which is open from nine till five, which would help to generate trade.

“There is an Indian takeaway just down the road and we don’t get any problems with litter there. But I don’t want to start my day by having to sweep up leftovers from kebabs.”

Residents initially thought sandwich chain Subway may be interested in the premises, at the corner of Owen Street.

Former tenants Belvoir moved out bef-ore Christmas and are located in the old Burnley Building Society premises in Padiham Road.

Brian Parkinson, of Rosegrove Action Group, has told councillors: “The proposed application would help keep the community from declining and provide other means of eating other than chip shops after tea time.

“Also it could mean the premises could remain empty for a long time if this was turned down.”
