Padiham school bans crisps, sweets and fizzy drinks

SWEETS, crisps and fizzy drinks have been banned from a Burnley super-school.

Martin Burgess, head of Shuttleworth College, Padiham, made the decision to improve pupils’ behaviour and concentration as well as encourage healthy eating.

Mr Burgess said the snacks had a “detrimental affect” on his young students and would be confiscated if brought onto school grounds.

Letters have now been sent to the parents outlining the schools’s hardline approach to unhealthy snacking.

Mr Burgess said: “Children are hyper enough without being stuffed full of e-numbers at lunchtime.

“On the whole the campaign has been welcomed by the students and parents.

“The children are starting to understand that we will not tolerate the sort of foods which will have a detrimental effect on their learning.

“Some parents have contacted us about specific dietary requirements, which we have of course met, but generally it is working.

Mr Burgess said that last year some students at the school were removed from lessons after causing disruptions whilst eating crisps and sweets.

Now any students at the 800 pupil school caught with any of the blacklisted foods will have their snack confiscated and returned to them at the end of the school day.

He said the ban was already having an affect at the school.

“In previous years we had problems with concentration and behaviour after lunch but it does seem to have approved now we have banned fizzy drinks and snacks,” Mr Burgess said.

As part of the health initiative the school is also pulling no punches on students caught smoking on the premises and has also issued an outright ban on chewing gum.

The headteacher’s letter to parents said: “Those students who will not accept our code of conduct or will not accept the support offered have no place within our college.”

According to the Government most children in the UK eat too much fat, particularly saturated fat, added sugars and salt which can have a detrimental affect on their health and learning.

Julie Hemingway, who works for the Healthy Eating Active Living campaign based in Burnley and Padiham, said Mr Burgess’s idea was a good one.

She said: “The school is definitely on the right road with the new crackdown on unhealthy foods.

“Crisps, sweets and fizzy drinks will not only harm the health of the child but also affect concentration levels.

“The school may find it tough at first to implement these rules, but in the long run they will see it is a sound idea and parents in and around Padiham will support it.”

The ban has also coincided with a revamp of food available in the school’s canteen, following a call by pupils.

Mr Burgess said: “The kids really took the healthy food issue to heart and carried it by themselves.

“The food which is now served at breakfast and at lunch is simply fantastic. It’s great to see over half of our pupils turning up at 8.15 to eat their breakfast.”

Pupils yesterday said they thought the ban was a good idea, although they missed their sugary treats, Emma Stott, 13, said: “I enjoy sweets and crisps so its a shame they are gone, but at least we are eating healthier food now, which is good.”

Chantelle Howarth, 13, said: “I think one of the benefits is that we all concentrate more after lunchtime now that we haven’t been snacking and eating sweets at lunch.”

And Paige Lord, 13, said: “I don’t enjoy the ban really, I miss the chocolate and crisps at lunch time and break time, but I guess there are some benefits.”

Padiham town councillor Bob Clark said it was important that children got a balenced diet but the decision on what youngsters eat should be made by their parents.

He said: “Maybe a total ban is a bit draconian but the school will have put a lot of thought into the decision and discussed it with parents and governors.”le

are you trying to make some sort of authoritarian statement? Do you think its a good idea for school children to have sweets, chocolate and fizzy drinks? Shouldn't the headteacher try to introduce a policy to promote a healthy lifestyle, increase childrens attention span and improve discipline?
.
Like many things in your life, there is no depth to your arguements.

Great - so we can now expect even more litter dropped by the kids on their way to school and after it when they get the confiscated items back to eat on the way home. As for the smoking ban - check out the bat house in the Long Plantation? Full of kids smoking at break and lunch.

Midas

Do you not have crisp, sweets & fizzy drinks ?
If you have kids i feel sorry for them, you, yourself sound like an only child.
How is the above going to improve discipline ?
What a crass statement.
Discipline has gone due to limp-wristed liberals like yourself banning this, that & the other.
When did the headmaster become an expert ref what we should & shouldn,t eat ?

Do you not read anything! Do you not have kids? Do you not notice a difference in their behaviour once they have had an excess of sugar and additives?
.
Beating children isn't the answer to improved discipline!

Who said anything about beating kids ?
The cane & pump were there as a deterrent, cross the line & you paid for it.
Were you beaten as a child, ring childline or maybe the samaritans .

Also yes i have kids & they know what is WRONG & what is RIGHT,they get that from something called their PARENTS.
They eat what they enjoy eating ,it's called choice.

Thanks Old Timer. I think we need to demonstrate outside Marsden Heights and beg the school governors to get Mr Martin back.
His replacement is a lost soul. Why Why Why did we loose a smashing head with a great community approach!! I think we should do a petition!

This plan has worked very well in other schools and should be applauded. Granted there are lots of parents out there who are well informed enough to limit the amount of junk their kids eat but as there are also lots of parents who see eating junk to be an integral part of life then the schools need to play a part.
Learning to be self-disciplined in terms of how you treat your body is a crucial life lesson and can only help to reduce the outrageous number of obese children in our society today.

Little Diamond ( or should that be "Little Brain Cell" ?)

Shakespeare called it, "stale news ". What next will the LT report?

Titanic Maiden Voyage Next Month

Keep an Eye Open for That One, Harold!

Schools with Healthy School Status will already be banning unsuitable snacks and have been doing so for eons.

burner,blackburn.
I was inerested in the story as my grandson attends the school and no story is new, the story comes under the heading of "local news" and that is what the LT is, and has always, been about.
Look at all the comments that shows the of interest. My final comment is to Abdul. I certainly hope you don't get your wish and get Mr. Martin back.... being selfish I want him to carry on supervising my grandson, sorry.

Where ever he goes Mr Burgess is a respectable figure, since he has left Pendle it seems a ghost town.

I don't think there will ever be another Mr Burgess in Pendle again, those who have tried to imitate him have failed and they know that. Had he been around we could have an indian takeaway at the skul to promote diversity. Keep the Good work up Mr Martin Burgess.

abdul786 or is it (Mr Burgess)

While Ofsted are in your school ,please tell them how many supply teacher's you have gone through & how many are there at the moment.
The pupil's education is suffering due to this.A different teacher every day & constant copying out of a text book doesn't sound like a good education to me.

I used to go to this school many years ago before it was flattened and re-built (Gawthorpe) A typical lunch was pot noodle from accross the road, with a bag of crisps and snickers, with a can of full fat full sugar coca cola. And if I really wanted to push the boat out, then chips and gravy instead. It was pure e number super salt high sugar poor diet heaven. And as a result you would think I grew up over weight, unemployed, and with a criminal record as long as my arm...... actually no, i flew through school, a-levels and a degree. I am a very healthy 10st weight and have a total number of zero criminal convictions. Here is an idea Mr Burgess and any other politican that might read this. And some of the parents

1. Want kids to behave??? Use proper discipline methods not blame the sugar or E numbers.

2. Parents, kick your kids of the playstations and out of the house and make them kick a football or whatever around.

3. Teach the kids how to make proper healthy food. I left school being apple to make the greatest cakes buns and biscuits in the world. Only thanks to my mother showing me can I prepare and steam veg, cook basics such as eggs etc etc etc.

Banning sweets will save the world..... GET A GRIP!!!!!!!!!1
