A WOMAN is furious after mounds of rubbish have been left to pile up outside the block of flats where she lives.

Norma Worrall, of Upper Brook Court, in Lowerhouse, Burnley said that two mounds of rubbish had not been collected by the council for four weeks.

She said other residents had complained about the smell and sight of the mounds of rubbish, which had overspilt from the wooden structures specially designed to contain refuse.

Norma said she had called Burnley Council about the collections three times and that the council said that its failure to collect was due to a dispute with the flats management.

She said: “Rubbish has not been collected for a month now and it is meant to be taken every two weeks.

"There are around 45 to 50 flats here and we’ve two wooden structures where residents have to dispose of rubbish, so the bins get overflowed and now rubbish is piled really high.

“It is a health hazard, there is rotting food that has sat there for a month now, it smells and I wouldn’t be surprised if rats were living in it.

“Not only are there bags of rubbish but glass bottles, cardboard and even bedding being dumped.Three weeks ago one of the wooden structures was set on fire, it now doesn’t have a roof or sides and the wind is blowing the rubbish everywhere.

Burnley Council recycling officer Tom Ormerod said: “The bin storage facilities provided by the management company are inadequate and only provide storage for half the weekly volume.
