A GANG used a truck to smash into a cash machine at a Burnley post office causing significant damage, police said.

They then fled the scene empty-handed after the incident which happened just before 3am today (Sunday).

The postmaster was asleep in the building at the time.

Witnesses reported seeing eight people leaving the scene.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident which has left the building unsafe.

A police spokesman said: "Detectives are appealing for witnesses and information following an unsuccessful attack on an ATM machine at Coal Clough Lane Post Office in the early hours of Easter Sunday.

"The offenders repeatedly reversed a Ford Flat Back lorry into the Post Office wall in a clear attempt to steal the ATM machine located there, causing significant structural damage to the building where the Post master was sleeping at the time.

"The building is currently unsafe and local residents are being advised to avoid the road and pathways near to the building.

"The lorry was believed to have been taken from the Manchester area and Police are liaising with detectives from Greater Manchester Police Force.

"It is believed that the offenders made off in a second vehicle back to the Manchester area after their unsuccessful efforts.

"Forensic experts are currently examining the vehicle and other items at the scene for evidence to identify those responsible."
