A ‘NUISANCE’ walkway which cuts across people’s gardens is to be closed.

The ginnel between Aspen Drive and Brownhill Avenue in Burnley is set to be shut permanently by housing company Calico next month after causing residents problems for several years.

People using the path have caused residents to feel ‘intimidated’ and as if their personal space is being ‘invaded’.

Cllr Lubna Khan, who represents the area on Burnley Council, said: “I have spoken to residents of both streets on the phone and the majority are welcoming this move.

“I want my residents to feel safe where they live and it sounds to me as if they have felt quite intimidated when some young people have been using it, particularly if they are elderly.

“They have said also that they feel it is their personal space and it is being invaded.

“I always try to support my residents so if they feel happy with this closure then I welcome it also.”

People who use the walkway are being advised by Calico to use another route along the top of Aspen Drive.

Work to close the ginnel will be completed on Tuesday, February 14.

Alicia Foley, Calico’s community involvement advisor, said: “Residents have informed us of the problems this shortcut has caused over the years.

“We are more than happy to respond to their concerns and to help make the area a better place to live.”

Cllr Gary Frayling, who also represents the area, said: “I know I wouldn’t like it if people were cutting through my garden and I would urge residents to come to me about any specific problems.

“If this is making residents feel unsafe then I fully support Calico’s decision to close it.”
