A BABY at the centre of a murder investigation died of multiple stab wounds, an inquest heard.

East Lancashire coroner Michael Singleton opened the inquest of the newborn baby named only as 'Infant Tunstill'.

The hearing at Blackburn Enterprise Centre was told the baby was found dead in a flat in Wellington Street, Burnley, on Monday, January 16, at 4pm.

A post mortem examination was carried out at the Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital and the cause of death was multiple stab wounds.

The coroner was told a woman has been arrested and charged with murder in relation of the death.

Mr Singleton said: "I will adjourn this mention hearing until March 2 anticipating the inquest will be suspended due to crown court proceedings."

*Rachel Tunstill, 26, of Wellington Court, Burnley was been charged with murder and is due to appear at Preston Crown Court on April 7 for a pre-trial hearing on April 7.
