A CRANE driver who punched a taxi driver has been given a suspended prison sentence – and told to watch his temper in future.

Cabbie Tariq Mahmood insisted he was attacked by James Craggs over a disputed fare, Burnley Crown Court was told.

But Craggs claimed the pair had fallen out when the taxi driver narrowly avoided a collision, the court heard.

Prosecutor Stephen Parker said Mr Mahmood had picked up Craggs, his sister and her fiancé from an address in Heather Bank. But as they were driving along Yorkshire Street, Craggs started an argument over the fare.

Mr Mahmood pulled his cab over and refused to drive any further, prompting Craggs to punch him in the nose.

The victim, who immediately reported the matter to police, said he needed surgery for a broken nose.

Craggs admitted assault and was given an eight-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months. He was also ordered to complete 200 hours of community service and pay £750 in compensation to Mahmood.

Judge James Adkin said it was clear Craggs, who had previous convictions for wounding and assault, had a problem with violence after drinking.
