A CCTV trail tracked the movements of two alleged murderers after a 60-year-old Burnley man was stabbed 30 times, according to prosecutors.

Paul Howarth and Gary Burley are said to have killed Keith Passmore in a row over a computer tablet device which the older man was supposed to sell on, but had exchanged for alcohol with a local shopkeeper.

Liverpool Crown Court was told security camera stills and footage show a series of movements between Mr Passmore’s home, in Clifton Road, and the home of Howarth’s ex-girlfriend, Kathleen Green, at sheltered flats in Harcourt Street.

Howarth is seen visiting Singh Stores, to buy beer and wine just before 9am on January 10, before returning again just after noon. He then buys a roll of bin bags, around 35 minutes later.

Gordon Cole QC, prosecuting, said: “Let me make this clear – we do not know when it was that Keith Passmore was killed in the flat of Paul Howarth.

“What we do know is that there were attempts made to clear up or clean up after the killing took place, which is why we have submitted this CCTV as evidence.”

Later Howarth returns to the shop at 1pm, and is then seen with Burley, with a dog on a lead, at 2.15pm at the Gannow Top subway, the court heard.

Jurors were told that by 4.23pm, the pair were recorded arriving at the Wood Top flats, and calling on Howarth’s ex-partner, Kathleen Green.

Mr Cole said CCTV footage from the flats showed the pair ‘larking around’ while talking to Ms Green.

It is alleged that Howarth and Burley were trying to convince Ms Green that they had killed Mr Passmore, persuading her to come back to Clifton Road with them. She is said to have fled when she saw Mr Passmore’s body in a bath at Howarth’s flat.

CCTV footage shows Ms Green running away from the scene, the court heard. She later informed the authorities.

Howarth is filmed just after 6pm, buying cans of beer and snacks at the store, and again at 6.30pm, this time with Burley, who still has the dog on a lead.

Prosecutors say Howarth remained silent over the alleged murder but Burley admitted to punching and kicking Mr Passmore, in a row over a computer tablet. He insisted Howarth had picked up the knife to stab the victim .

Howarth, 48, of Clifton Road, and Burley, 44, of Herbert Road, both Burnley, each deny murdering Mr Passmore. Burley has also pleaded not guilty to threatening to kill Ms Green and possession of an offensive weapon.

The trial continues.
