A STUDENT has set up a support group for young carers in East Lancashire after struggling to cope when her father suffered three major strokes.
Stacey Murphy, from Chorley, said her life changed completely last year when her dad Stephen was left immobile and needing constant care.
The 23-year-old abandoned plans to do a teacher training course, and has spent the last 15 months caring for her dad.
Her mum Julie has shared the burden, but managed to keep her job as an HR manager, thanks to Stacey’s help.
Stacey said: “There were times that I didn’t think I could make it through and I had no one really who had the experiences and feelings that I have been through.
“When looking on forums for carers, I noticed that there were a lot of gaps when it came to young adult carers. So I want to fill that gap.”
The support group will not offer formal help, but give carers a chance to communicate with others in a similar position.
