Blade boy injures two girls at Blackburn school
11:14am Thursday 20th December 2012 in News
A SCHOOLBOY has been excluded after two girls were injured in an incident with a craft knife.
The 15-year-old pupils were treated for injuries, including cuts to the arm, during a lesson.
Paramedics were called to Witton Park High School in Blackburn on Tuesday and gave first aid, before one of the girls was taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital.
Following the incident, Dean Logan, headteacher at the Buncer Lance school, permanently excluded a teenage boy in connection with the incident.
Police were then called in and the school’s designated police officer PC Vanessa Rushton launched an investigation.
The Lancashire Telegraph understands the incident happened in a technology class.
Officers said there was no suggestion that the incident was premeditated or malicious.
The blade was school property and had not been brought in from home.
Sgt Graham Marshall said: “PC Rushton is working very closely with teachers and staff.
“We have identified all parties involved and the offender will be subjected to a rigorous police investigation.”
Police said both victims were yet to be interviewed at length as responsible adults needed to be present.
Their injuries had been described by medics as ‘minor’ and ‘superficial’.
Head Mr Logan said: “I can confirm that a student was involved in an incident in school this week, which has resulted in the student receiving an exclusion.
“The student was dealt with promptly using the school’s behaviour policy.
“Whilst exclusions are not common place, they are from time to time necessary and will be used to send out a clear message that unacceptable behaviour will not be tolerated in school.
“The safety and wellbeing of all our pupils is our main priority.
“Parents of the student support the school in this action.”
The incident took place at around 12.15pm.
The boy will be interviewed by police when he voluntarily attends the station today.
A police spokesman added: “Police were called by the ambulance service to an incident at Witton Park High School following reports of an alleged assault.
“Two pupils were taken to the Royal Blackburn Hospital to be treated for relatively minor injuries.
“We are looking into the possibility that the minor injuries were caused by a small blade from a craft knife and we are working closely with the school to establish exactly what has happened.”
