Wonder if he talks proudly about his role in
the sentencing of Stcfan Kizko who was wrongly imprisoned after malicious wrongful evidence. Stefan needed a good lawyer but Fatty Waddington advised him to plead guilty. Then the useless fat lump went off for a cushy job in the sun.

The Thatcher years had a damaging effect on Britain. Thatcher did a lot to destroy Britiish industry by either closing it down or selling it off to foreign countries just to make political point destryoying unions and workplace representation, It has led to loss of job security, short term/part time, conrtacts, people being replaced by foreign agency workers etc etc and why nearly everything you buy is imported from China etc.
Today we have a government that is still creating wealth for the wealthy and even more poverty for the poor
I am no left wing socialist. just an ordinary guy who lives in the real world and my question is this.
Given the state of the country and the damage the conservatives have done are they likely to replace Cameron before the next election and sacrifice him in order to try and win at least a few seats? it has taken a long time and a lot of misery for people to wake up to what the likes of Thatcher,Waddington, and Camerons ideolgy is. Hopefully we will not see it again this century..

Well I'm glad he enjoyed writing it because I can't imagine many enjoying reading it - straight to the remainder table I think. I seem to remember he was Home Secretary at the time of the poll tax riot and saw film of him in Covent Garden London the day after. He just didn't have a clue what had happened or understand how loathed the tax was across a broad swathe of the population. Didn't his bunch manage to lose Clitheroe soon after? Quite an achievement.

This man was the epitome of Thatchers evil. Cameron is even worse. the hatred these arrogant snobs have for ordinary people. They still believe they were born to rule. I won't repeat the colossal damage done to the country in the thatcher years. I just hope people will realise the Tories are no good for a modern day Britain.

Does he reveal all, though his revelations will be hedged about by security caveats? Perhaps in his case there are no security concerns at all; this will be an extraordinary account indeed if so - a former home secretary tells all and suffers no state-sponsored consequences.

I think you will find it was New Labour who did more to destroy manufacturing in this country.

Not only that, their socialist fairy tale ended with this country being crippled by debt.

It is very difficult to have calm and considered debate about Thatcher as views are polarised.

Looking back on events it seems to me that Mrs Thatcher and the Conservative Party at that time were extremely lucky, and I would be interested to know whether David Waddington’s account of this period refers to this favourable confluence of events.

From the political standpoint, the Conservative Party were greatly aided by Jim Callaghan’s decision not to call a general election in 1978 when the outcome may very well have been different from 1979. Secondly, the fracturing of the Labour Party with the establishing of the SDP split the progressive vote and enabled the Conservative’s to secure their position. Thirdly, the opposition parties were unable to muster a leader who could match Mrs Thatcher’s sense of presence.

From an economic standpoint the Thatcher Government had one crucial advantage over the previous Labour administration, namely: significant quantities of North Sea oil. This had the effect of transforming the trade position of the country while simultaneously having great revenue benefits to the national exchequer. On the other side of the equation the Pound became a petro-currency and as the value of Sterling soared our exports became less competitive; and it is this that accounted for the end of a large swathe of the UK’s manufacturing base at that time.

Among the many tragedies of Thatcherism the failure to capture the benefits of North Sea oil for our children and grand-children is a prime example of the dangers that arise when politicians – and ally to other parties - are blinkered by ideology and myopic in the extreme.
Unfortunately for the nation Mrs Thatcher and the Conservative Party had no interest in saving and investing some of the oil revenue off-shore in the form of a United Kingdom Wealth Fund. This would have gone some way to dampening the Pound and allowing manufacturing industry some time to adjust.

Norway took a different route and now has a fund worth $660bn, which I would imagine generates a fair bit of income.

Although it did not seem so at the time in truth Mrs Thatcher had a good set of cards but played them very badly; a bit like Tony Blair.

It’s very difficult for a nation to survive two tragedies of this magnitude in close succession.

Well I think YOU'LL find that you've bought the tory lies to try and deflect righteous blame from them. This thread is about the evil of Thatcher so how you've come up with some worthless nonsense about something from a different era makes you look stupid. Shytalk was spot on and you....aren't.

Wasn't he prosecuting Kizko? I don't know if there is any link between his role and any knowledge of the evidence that never managed to make it to the defence team :-)
