ROADS

MOTORISTS have been warned to continue to expect ice on the area's roads despite slightly warmer temperatures.

Warnings of widespread icy roads remain in place for today as rain showers fall on frozen roads, adding to the hazardous driving conditions.

Main roads are mostly clear but rural and residential routes could remain treacherous across the East Lancashire boroughs due to a lack of grit.

However, a number of roads have re-opened, including Blacksnape Road at Hoddlesden Road (still closed near Darwen), Bacup Road, Burnley, and Crown Point Road, Burnley.

Police reported no road-related incidents over the weekend.

TRAINS

Train services through East Lancashire have largely been unaffected during the cold snap and Northern Rail say services are running as normal today.

TAXIS

Taxi firms have been badly hit by the atrocious weather - at a time when more passengers are seeking their services.

Tanveer Sharif, manager of CB Taxis in Church Street, Accrington, said: "We usually have 30 drivers, but on Tuesday we had none and on Thursday only 12.

"Drivers just took one look at the conditions and did not want to take their cars out because there have been so many bumps.

"The roads are just like ice rinks and I have had to pull two of my drivers out of the snow with my 4x4."
