POLICE have spoken to a teen gang hanging out in a supermarket car park over suspected drug use.

Shoppers at Blackburn Morrisons have hit out over a the group suspected of smoking cannabis at a town centre supermarket.

Complaints have been made over ‘a strong smell of cannabis’ near the lift of the first-floor car park of the Morrisons supermarket in Blackburn.

A group of teenagers have frequently been spotted hanging around the lift, and drivers using the car park say there has been an issue there for at least the last six months.

Police were called to the car park on Wednesday and spoke to a group of young people before moving them along.

Bosses at Morrisons said they have a zero tolerance policy to anti-social behaviour and will be speaking to police about the issues.

One shopper who asked not to be named said: “I park on the car park for work and most nights there’s a really strong smell of cannabis when you get in the lift on the ground floor.

“When you come out of the lift there’s usually a group of four or five youths hanging around the lift exit on the first floor.

“They’re not acting in a yobbish way but you have to wonder what an elderly person would think if they came out of the lift to take their shopping back to the car and they’re confronted with a load of youths smoking illegal drugs.”

Officers said they were called to the car park after receiving a call from a member of the public.

A police spokesman said: “We were called to the car park at around 6pm.

“Six young people were suspected of using drugs. One person was stopped and searched at the scene. They were spoken to and moved on.”

Morrisons said it would be investigating the problem.

A spokesman said: “We’ve got a zero tolerance approach to any forms of anti-social behaviour and we’ll be speaking to our police community support officers about the issue.”
