Volunteers will help shape the future of their information services.

Parents and children groups will help shape Blackburn with Darwen's Local Offer website, which details services, support and guidance available to children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities.

Adele Butler from Lower Darwen said the website helped her orchestrate her son's move to secondary school.

She said: "My son, who has Down's syndrome, had recently moved into secondary school and I was looking for ways to make the transition as smooth and a positive experience for him.

"I knew nothing about The Local Offer website and the support it gives. We had been attending a Saturday Club and someone suggested we might want to find out more about the service.

"It was a breath of fresh air to find all the services and support available for us in one location."

Ms Butler has since become a member of the service's parents' group, which is one of the main driving forces behind the way information is presented and communicated and the way local services are developed.

Her son, Alex, also takes part in the children's forum which allows young people to influence the service.

The Local Offer website will be updated and relaunched this month with work from the group influencing what information will be included and the way it will be presented.
