FOUR men got out of a blue Jaguar after it collided head on with another vehicle at high speed.

Blackburn magistrates heard the driver was challenged by a witness who took a photograph of him before he fled from the scene of the crash which resulted in two people needing hospital treatment.

Police used the mobile phone picture to identify Anthony Adam Clegg who was found nearby, the court was told.

Clegg, 27, of Edge Side, Great Harwood, pleaded not guilty to driving with excess alcohol, without due care and attention and failing to stop.

He was convicted after trial. He was ordered to do 250 hours unpaid work, fined £375 and ordered to pay £600 costs, £300 compensation and £85 victim surcharge.

He was also banned from driving for 17 months but this was suspended after Simon Farnsworth, defending, lodged an appeal against conviction.

Enza Geldard, prosecuting, said when police found Clegg he denied any involvement in the incident but was arrested on the evidence of the mobile phone image.

"Nearby the police found a blood stained hoody which the defendant was wearing in the photograph," said Mrs Geldard.

Mr Farnsworth said his client had always maintained his innocence and was appealing against conviction.

"Following the collision the rear and driver's door of the jaguar were jammed and all four people got out of the same door," said Mr Farnsworth.
