A CAR that was deliberately set on fire on a Blackburn street rolled 100 feet down the road, narrowly missing other parked cars and houses, after the heat caused the handbrake to fail.

Fire crews were called to Linden Avenue at around 1.15am this morning after reports a Mercedes was on fire.

As the firefighters began to extinguish the blaze the car started rolling down the street towards Shear Brow before coming to rest against a kerb.

A Lancashire Fire and Rescue spokesman said: "It could have been a nasty incident, it was lucky that it avoided all the parked cars and it also could have caused a road accident on Shear Brow.

"As soon as we arrived it started rolling down the street, we had to chase it with the hose, eventually it hit a kerb and stopped, which prevented it from causing damage or going in to any gardens.

"It looks the heat has caused the handbrake to fail which has caused the car to start rolling down the hill.

"We believe the fire was started suspiciously and an investigation is ongoing."
