A PRIMARY pupil used her artistic flair to highlight road safety issues blighting her school.

Eight-year-old Laurie Black’s winning poster design was picked out from 150 entries at Lower Darwen Primary and will now hang on railings to hammer the message home to parents.

Dangerous driving and inconsiderate parking are the main worries for concerned staff, parents and residents at the Milking Lane school.

Laurie, who won a £20 voucher for The Mall Blackburn and a printed copy of her artwork, said: “I wanted to make the poster because it was fun and road safety is important.”

The entries were judged by local PCSO Justin Limb and school governor Chris Hill, who is also a chief inspector with Greater Manchester Police.

Friends of Lower Darwen have paid for the banner to be printed and installed.

Headteacher Steve Cumbo said: “The road outside is very busy when the children are being dropped off and picked up.

“Increasingly, some parents have been driving dangerously and inconsiderately and we have had complaints. We have been working with the police to get the message across that this is not acceptable.”

Chief Insp Hill said: “ My message is simple: arrive in plenty of time, respect local residents and ‘no parking’ lines, and park sensibly and safely so you are not putting children in danger.”
