THE DOG which attacked a two-year-old girl and left her with serious facial injuries has been destroyed.

The toddler was savaged by what has now been confirmed as a Staffordshire bull terrier as she visited friends in Borrowdale Avenue, Shadsworth, Blackburn, on Friday.

Police revealed the dog, which was not a prohibited breed under the Dangerous Dogs Act, was destroyed this afternoon. (Wed) Detective Sergeant Jon Holmes said: "The dog has been destroyed this afternoon.

"No criminal prosecution will be brought as no offence has been committed under the Dangerous Dogs Act. Expert identification has confirmed that the dog was a Staffordshire bull terrier which is not a prohibited breed."

The girl, who has not been named by police, was taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital on Friday but later transferred to the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital where she is said to be making "steady" recovery.
