The four-time world champ and MBE said: “Just being with other so-called celebrities is going to be a really hard challenge for me.

“I don’t really like other people and the worse kind of celebrity for me is someone who hasn’t really done anything, just famous for being on reality TV.”

Before entering the show, hosted by Ant and Dec, Carl, Foggy received messages of support via Twitter from restaurant Northcote in Langho and his daughter Danielle.

His wife Michaela tweeted: “Feeling very nervous for my man.”

In a twist to the show, producers split the contestants into two groups and viewers voted to give one group the chance to have a final night of luxury, while the other was thrown straight into the jungle.

The Only Way Is Essex star Gemma Collins burst into tears while sitting in the helicopter awaiting take-off.

As the chopper began accelerating, Gemma started crying and, with mascara running down her cheeks, she begged to be let off.

She pleaded: “Can you stop a minute please? I’m serious, just stop. I need to get out. Seriously, I’m going to be sick. I can’t do it, no way.”

All the time, Foggy was sitting in the back struggling to contain his laughter.

Among the other celebrities entering the show were former Conservative minister, Edwina Currie, who has previously appeared on Strictly Come Dancing and Wife Swap.

TV presenter Melanie Sykes and Coronation Street star Craig Charles have been joined by veteran newsreader Michael Buerk, whose coverage of the 1984 Ethiopian famine inspired the Band Aid charity record.

On his arrival in the jungle by speedboat, viewers saw Buerk warn he was not a fan of celebrity culture.
