PLANS to build a waste transfer station in Darwen have been put on hold while council officials seek ways of preventing heavy good vehicle traffic problems in the town.
Giant refuse company SITA wants to build the complex, creating 20 jobs, on the former Wolstenholme International ink works site.
The proposed Darwen Resource Recovery Park in Lower Eccleshill Road, Eccleshill, will complement its existing materials recycling unit on the same site.
Blackburn with Darwen council planning and highways committee ignored officers advice to approve the scheme after Suddell ward councillor Paul Browne expressed fears about traffic affecting nearby residential streets.
The Liberal Democrat said: “Unless we ban lorries turning left we will get heavy good vehicles going through Chapels. We had a problem with this before and unless all the heavy lorries turn right down towards the motorway we will have that problem again.”
The committee decided to defer a decision while officials explored means of ensuring all heavy lorries using the site turned right.
