PUBLIC toilet users in Barnoldswick are being caught short due to a lack of toilet rolls in the town’s facilities, local campaigners claim.

Coun Jenny Purcell and her husband Harry said the lack of toilet rolls in the town’s main public conveniences was a “serious issue”.

They said that people who used the toilets, on Leo’s car park, were constantly faced with a dilemma because the toilet roll supply was rarely replenished.

Harry said: “I went in last week and there were four sheets of toilet roll in one cubicle and none at all in the other.

“It is not an acceptable situation.

“This has been going on for years now. It is not good enough and something has to be done.

“The toilets are clean – that is not a problem – but the lack of toilet roll is.

“They are the town’s main public toilets and they are well used, but this is not a good image to portray.”

Coun Jenny Purcell said: “It is not just that it is an inconvenience but it is not healthy either.

“It will only take one person to fall ill before we do have a problem.

“It has to be improved and there must be better ways to check the situation and ensure that there is always enough toilet roll.

“I have asked the council to let us know how much the vandal-proof strong toilet roll holders are, but it really shouldn’t need to come to that.”

Pendle Council said that the toilets were checked three times a day, but they would be speaking to contractors to make sure the toilet roll was replaced on a regular basis.

Bryan Thompson, the council’s community facilities manager, said: “Our cleaning contractor checks the toilets in Barnoldswick in the morning, at midday and just before lock-up at around 6pm, and toilet paper is replaced then if it is running low.

“I will talk to them about this to make sure there’s enough.”
