A TWITTER appeal to help find missing children is being launched.

Lancashire police will be lending their support to the Missing People charity’s Big Tweet campaign on Friday.

The charity will twee a different appeal for a missing child every 30 minutes for 24 hours.

Police will help swell the potential audience for the appeals by re-tweeting them to its 14,500 Twitter followers.

Between April 2011 and March 2012, 9,174 people were reported missing in Lancashire; 73 per cent (6,715) of of them were foundwithin 24 hours.

Detective Inspector Hazel Stewart said: “Only on very rare occasions is the disappearance linked to anything of a serious criminal nature.

“We would hope that a person would contact us directly, or a charity like Missing People, who provide a service where you can pass a message on to both the police and your family that you are safe.”
