THE Queen is set to be served with a dish of best Pendle lamb when she pops into Turf Moor for lunch, according to outgoing chairman Barry Kilby.

Caterers for the big day will turn their back on traditional match day fayre of pie and pies and will instead use local produce to create a meal fit for royalty.

In all around 100 people will be served at the event during the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh’s visit to Burnley on May 16.

Earlier she will have been given a tour of Weavers Triangle by Burnley champion Prince Charles and will also have taken a look around the Burnley College and UCLAN campus.

Mr Kilby said: “Perhaps we shouldn’t push our luck with the stereotype of serving pies!

“There has been a lot of protocol to follow.

“The meal is for 100 people, 50 of those have been invited by the club, long serving employers, directors and guest, and 50 are from the official party.

“We are serving Pendle lamb so it’s local produce. There’s a vegetarian option as well so a lot of care has been taken as we have to square everything with the Palace.

“We hope she’s happy with the hospitality.

“We have already done a taste test for the lamb.”

Mr Kilby said he had known for several months about the Queen’s visit but had been sworn to secrecy.

He said: “I’ve known about this since early December and we’ve had several visits from Lord Lieutenant of Lancaster choosing where Her Majesty will go and where she will sit and what the menu will be.

“There has been a lot of security of involved as well but they are impressed with the facilities.

“Burnley director Clive Holt Burnley has put in a lot of time and effort into the Queen’s visit to Turf Moor.

“It’s a great honour for Burnley Football Club and the town.

“We do a lot of work with the Duke of Edinburgh scheme and Prince Charles is a well-known Claret so hopefully the club has played some part in the Queen’s visit to Burnley.”

However Mr Kilby said that Prince Charles wouldn’t be accompanying the Queen to Turf Moor this time as he had another engagement.

He added: “As I’m stepping down as chairman, it will be a nice end to my time here.

“Jimmy McIlroy will be attending as a famous former player and he was always awarded the MBE last year so that’s a link to the past and one of our famous sons.

“And the manager Eddie Howe and some of his coaching staff will be here as well. ”
