CHURCHGOERS in Rossendale will be treated to a special visit from a Native American speaker.

Bacup Spiritualist Church will host an evening with WaNaNeeChee, from Turtle Mountain Indian Reservation in North Dakota, on May 19.

The church, on Pickup Street off South Street, is sold-out for the event which has attracted attention from the regular congregation and beyond.

Jean Thompson, who organises special functions at the church, said members were fascinated by Native American culture.

She said: “There is a lot of energy change going on this year relevant to the Spiritualist community and WaNaNeeChe has an excellent reputation in America for his workshops.

“He deals with the subject of ‘The Old Ways’ and promotes understanding of spirit, body and mind.”

WaNaNeeChe, who prefers to refer to himself as Indigenous, joined the army upon graduating from college, and went on to become a civil rights lawyer.

Bacup will be the only place in Lancashire to welcome Mother Earth lodge leader WaNaNeeChe, which means ‘one who is needed by the people’.

Church president Jean Tiddy said the Spiritualist church’s relationship with Native Americans stretched back many years.

“Obviously we’re all very spiritual people and I am very excited that WaNaNeeChe is coming to Bacup.

“He will be going through some meditation techniques and discussing what the future holds for us.

“The members here are very curious and looking forward to what should be a unique occaision.”
