BURNLEY is bracing itself for an American invasion today as the town celebrates the re-vamped Rock and Blues Festival which began last night.

Charter Walk Shopping Centre will become the 52nd State for a day as the Blues Brothers Jake and Elwood come to town in their classic American cop car.

And with live performers during the day, including teenage singing sensation Nicole Talmer who was a hit at last year’s Towneley Live event, plus staff donning American-inspired outfits, there promises to be bags of bank holiday fun.

Now back to its traditional three-day format, the festival is bigger than ever with Burnley Mechanics hosting blues stars from both sides of the Atlantic and a wide range of fringe venues, each named after an American city, offering live music over the weekend.

Last night the main stage saw Jimmie Vaughan, founder of the Famous Thunderbirds, headlining with other acts including Dr Truth and Albany Down.

Steve Reid, of promoters Doc Redeye Events, said: “Everyone in the town has bought into the festival in a big way. There is a genuine excitement around the town.

“We have brought some world class musicians to East Lancashire but at the same time are hoping to provide something for families and a younger audience too.”

Today’s main stage line-up includes another top class American import Sugar Ray and the Bluetones headlining along with appearances by Hamilton Loomis and Hokie Joint.

Tomorrow sees a bill including Dani Wilde, Ian Siegal, Matt Schofield and Nine Below Zero teaming up with Squeeze front man Glenn Tilbrook.
