PLANS for a Burnley Pride event have hit a further delay after a date in May earmarked for the celebration has been cancelled.

A group started to make plans for East Lancashire’s first gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender pride event in March 2011.

More than 160 people had signed up to a Burnley Pride Facebook group, showing their backing for a pride event, are organisers were confident the event would be a success.

But a post on the Burnley LGBT Facebook site now says: “Burnley Pride is not happening in April and never was.

“It was to be May 26 but is again postponed. This is because of issues with acts and lack of local support.

“Do people actually want a pride event – that is the question?”

When plans were first announced for a pride event organisers had held meeting with the council, police and MP.

The idea also had support from the Lancashire Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) group.

Organisers had spoken of the event being staged in Burnley because of its thriving LGBT scene.

They wanted to follow on the success of similar events in Manchester and Blackpool and create a pride event for East Lancashire.

The event was due to take place in September last year, but in the end a smaller fundraising event took place to try and drum up more support for a festival in the town.

Organisers then wanted the event to take place around the end of May or start of June.
