FORMER teacher, sportsman and comedian William Shaw has died aged 84.

Mr Shaw, who had lived in Blackburn and was an English teacher at Bangor Street School and Shadsworth High, died after an illness.

A keen cricketer, Mr Shaw was a spin bowler and coach and encouraged pupils to play.

He also had a passion for poetry, drama and literature and wrote scripts for comedies, even appearing in travelling TV talent show Top Town in the 1950s.

Close friend, Maurice Gavan, said he would be missed by many.

He said: His humour, timing, mimicry and grasp of parody were legendry.

Like all good comics, Bill was essentially a serious man with a deep understanding of humanity.

Mr Shaw was living in Grange Over Sands, Cumbria, when he died. His funeral is at Torrisholme Crematorium, near Morecambe, at 10.15am on April 27.
