A 38-year-old Burnley fan has admitted throwing a coin on to the playing area during the Ewood Park leg of the FA Youth Cup semi-final.

Blackburn magistrates heard that father-of-two Daniel Hockett had never been in trouble before and described the incident as a “moment of madness.”

And Imran Hussain, defending, revealed his client had resigned as a coach with Huncoat United Junior Football Club as a direct result of the incident. Hockett, of Aysgarth Drive, Accrington, pleaded guilty to throwing a coin at the derby match between the youth teams of Blackburn Rovers and Burnley.

He was fined £210 with £100. The magistrates declined to make a football banning order.

Scott Ainge, prosecuting, said a police inspector had seen Hockett throw something in the general direction of another officer who was on the pitch surround.

A coin was recovered and Hockett arrested.

Mr Hussain said his client was thoroughly ashamed of his behaviour.

“It was a moment of madness which resulted in an act that was extraordinary for him,” said Mr Hussain.

He said Hockett, a HGV driver, was a Burnley season ticket holder and regularly took his two sons to games.

“He has been supporting the club since he was six years old when his grandma first took him and there have been no previous incidents,” said Mr Hussain.
