PLANS to open a vocational centre in Bacup in September have moved a step closer after planners gave the project the green light.

Rossendale Council’s Development Control Committee gave Accrington and Rossendale College the go ahead to transform Stubbylee Barn and its associated land within Stubbylee Park into a top of the range training facility.

The centre which will specialise in motor repairs, horticulture and construction, hopes to open in September and will employ five members of staff.

Initially, the centre will provide spaces for 50 learners aged between 14 to 19 year old in 2012/13 before rising to 100 in later academic years.

Principal Stephen Carlisle said: “Accrington and Rossendale College is delighted to have received planning permission for the Bacup Vocational Centre and look forward to beginning work on the project immediately.

“Bringing general construction, motor engineering and close working links with the Stubbylee Community Greenhouses Group is a very exciting prospect.

“This work will join our many exciting programmes that are already based in Rossendale. These are currently operating from the Maden Centre and Rossendales at Helmshore. We look forward to welcoming our first students from September 2012.”
