A 24-YEAR-OLD man released from Preston prison at 9.30 am travelled back to Blackburn, went to probation, got himself drunk, travelled to Darwen and assaulted his mother before 2.30 pm.

And his rapid re-offending lead Karl Jack Sharples straight back to prison, a day after his release.

Sharples, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to assaulting Sharon Urmson. He was sentenced to 12 weeks in prison after the magistrates heard he had already been recalled to prison to serve the licence period of his previous sentence which will keep him behind bars until September.

Catherine Allan, prosecuting, said when Sharples arrived at his mum’s house he was already drunk.

She hadn’t seen him for five months because he had been in prison.

“He asked her if she had bought him a track suit and when she said she hadn’t he immediately became aggressive,” said Miss Allan.

“He put his head against hers and told her she was a useless mother and a waste of space. Without warning he grabbed her round the throat and squeezed hard.”

Mrs Urmson managed to released her son’s grip and screamed at him to get out of her house. Before he left he grabbed her by the throat again.

Andrew Church-Taylor, defending, said when Sharples was released from Preston prison at 9.30am he was told to report to probation in Blackburn.

“He did that and then intended catching the train to Darwen to see his mum,” said Mr Church-Taylor. “Unfortunately as he got to the Boulevard he met some former associates who persuaded him to spend his discharge grant on alcohol.

“When he was released he was determined to keep away from alcohol but unfortunately his resolve did not last long.”
