A LEADING East Lancashire criminal defence solicitor has commented on the sentencing of two men for the murder of Stephen Lawrence.
Gary Dobson and David Norris were jailed for life with a minimum of 14 and 15 years respectively for the 1993 stabbing in London.
Judge Mr Justice Treacy said he was bound by law to sentence the two men as if they were youths.
But that has now been referred to the Attorney General Dominic Grieve MP to examine if the sentence is unduly lenient.
Farleys Solicitors parter in criminal law, Andrew Church-Taylor, who is based in Blackburn, said: “The high profile and emotive nature of the murder of Stephen Lawrence has sparked the attention of the public and there are those who now question whether it was fair to sentence those responsible as juveniles.
“The argument goes that those who have sought to avoid or evade justice have ultimately benefited from such actions, as has the protracted and prolonged investigation resultant on denial.
“There is no right or wrong answer, merely a further matter arising from this most tragic case.”
