A BEST man running late for a wedding knocked down a little boy in Colne, a court heard.

Father of three Shaun Leslie Northage, 41, was a learner driver not being supervised and was not insured.

The six-year-old child, said to have gone into the road on his bike without looking, suffered minor injuries in the collision on August 27.

The hearing was told how Northage did not leave his details and gave his partner's name, but, the prosecution told Burnley magistrates, it was not suggested he was trying to evade responsibility.

She went to the scene and gave his name as he was already running late for the wedding.

The defendant, of North Street, Colne, admitted driving without insurance and otherwise than in accordance with a licence.

He was fined £100, with £85 costs, a £15 victim surcharge and was given six penalty points.

Andrew Robinson, prosecuting, said just before noon, police attended Chattam Street, after reports of the collision.

The six-year-old suffered minor injuries, paramedics attended but were not concerned by his injuries and the defendant was allowed on his way to the wedding.

Northage, a provisional licence holder, had left his partner's name, but not his own.

The boy's grandfather was present at the time and did not blame the defendant, who he knew, for what happened.

Northage was not speeding, or driving inappropriately and the child went into the road without looking.

Northage, his partner and child had been going to West Yorkshire for the wedding and he had nipped out to get some hair pins for his partner.

The collision occurred on the way back from the shop.

The solicitor said Northage shouldn't have been driving without supervision.
