A Burnley man wanted for questioning about the murders of a Southport landlady and her mother was arrested yesterday.

His lawyer said Barry Morrow had “surrendered himself at a UK police station.”

Police named Morrow, 51, after launching a Europe-wide manhunt for him on Monday.

Two days earlier the strangled bodies of Tesco worker Angela Holgate, 54, and her 75-year-old mother Alice Huyton were discovered by a worried family member at Mrs Holgate's home near Southport.

Merseyside police said then that Morrow had not been seen since Saturday and Mrs Holgate’s white Citroen car was missing.

On Tuesday, a man claiming to be the former Ivy Bank High School pupil contacted the Lancashire Telegraph via Facebook.

Our reporter received a series of messages from Mr Morrow’s website account over an hour period.

There was nothing to suggest the contact with this newspaper was a hoax.

At the time officers confirmed they would be looking into the contact as part of their investigation.

Following the Facebook contact, the Lancashire Telegraph received a call from a solicitor at Burnley’s Donald Race and Newton solicitors, on a mobile phone number provided to the Facebook sender advising they were acting on behalf of the 51-year-old.

The solicitor confirmed he had been instructed to represent Morrow.

David Lawson, a partner at Donald Race and Newton solicitors said yesterday that Morrow has been arrested in the UK.

He said: “All I am willing to say at this stage is Mr Morrow has surrended himself at a police station earlier today.

“This was in the UK.”

A Merseyside Police spokesman said: "Merseyside Police have arrested a 51-year-old man from Southport on suspicion of the murder of Alice Huyton and Angela Holgate in Fairhaven Road, Southport.

"He will be questioned by detectives.”

Morrow, who grew up in Brush Street, Burnley used to work at the Warburton’s factory in the town, his family said.
