ACCRINGTON Railway Station has been shortlisted to win a global building award.

The eco-design train station, is one of four North West projects which will battle it out for a top Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors Awards in London on Friday.

The projects will go head-to-head with others from Europe, Africa, USA and the rest of the UK at the RICS Awards for the ultimate accolade of RICS Global Project of the Year.

The Accrington project’s competitors include the Speke Neighbourhood Health Centre in Liverpool, art deco cinema The Plaza in Stockport and The Inspire Centre community hub, in Levenshulme, Manchester.

The awards attracted an initial entry of 70 projects.

The four north west winners will now be showcased at the glitzy global grand final at the Savoy in London hosted by TV presenter Julia Bradbury.

The station features a wind turbine, solar panels and water harnessing technologies as well as improved cycle facilities with the introduction of hoops and lockers.

A bus, cycle and walk guide has also been produced to to assist people getting to and from the station.

The Prospects Foundation, an environmental charity in Hyndburn, has also offered to create a community vegetable patch at the £2million station.
