A SUPERMARKET worker arrested after reports to the police of erratic driving was almost four times the drink-drive limit, a court heard.

Kay White, 58, could not remember why she had got behind the wheel, but thought she might have been going for a takeaway.

She enjoyed a glass of wine in the evenings, but had had a lot of spirits she normally kept for visitors to her home, Burnley magistrates were told.

White, who was stopped in Admiral Street in the town, gave a sample at the police station which showed 124 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath.

The legal limit is 35.

The defendant, who was said not to have a drink problem, had been staring jail in the face, but was spared by a district judge.

White, of Hornby Street, Burnley, admitted driving with excess alcohol, on August 15.

She had no previous convictions. White was given a 12-month community order, with supervision, and a 16-week curfew, between 8.30pm and 7.30am.

She was also banned for three years and must pay £85 costs.

District Judge Peter Ward, who told her she had been a danger to other people as well as herself, said he was prepared to accept there wasn’t a “significant drink problem”.
