A MAN attacked his mother in her shop after she refused to lend him cash, a court heard.

Elliott Matthews, 39, threw a comb at victim Janet Matthews, then rushed at her, grabbed her by the neck and pushed her against the counter.

A friend of the victim’s remonstrated with the defendant and he eventually let go.

His mother told Matthews there was a family agreement not to lend him money and a heated row followed.

Matthews was shouting and swearing and he then left the shop and drove off.

Burnley magistrates were told how Matthews was said to have suffered long-term depression since the collapse of his marriage led to a breakdown.

The defendant, of Quarry Street, Padiham, admitted assault by beating on July 29.

He was bailed until September 14, for a pre-sentence report and the bench told him they were looking at a community order, including help with anger management.

Matthews, who must not contact his mother, faces a restraining order to keep him away from her, when he is sentenced.

Trevor Grice, defending, said Matthews’ father, who was a contender for the boxing British middleweight title in the 1970s, had been taking him to the gym and boxing, to try to get his temper controlled through discipline.

Mr Grice added: “The defendant realises he has a problem with anger management.”
