AN East Lancashire husband and wife are the proud owners of what is believed to be the UK’s oldest working shower - at 35 years old.

Tony and Margaret Jackson installed the Mira 8b shower with a Kelta shower head shortly after buying their bungalow in 1976.

It has served the couple and their 30-year-old twin daughters Victoria and Christina, who moved out five years ago, ever since.

Margaret, who said Tony fitted the shower himself, responded to an appeal by Mira to find the UK’s oldest shower.

She said: “I just saw the advertisement in a magazine and though ‘oh, we must be in contention’.

“I rang my daughter Christina in Lincolnshire and she said I should definitely go for it, especially with these tiles, which we have had a bit of stick for.

"They’re very 1970s!”

Margaret, of Brierfield, said she thought they had paid between £50 and £60 for the shower, making one of the best bargains she had found over the years.

She said “We’ve never had any problems with the shower – it’s always been reliable and provided our whole family with a great shower in the morning.

“We did replace the washers a few years ago but that’s a small job when you think about how long the shower’s been going for.

“We’ve actually turned down the offer of a new shower from Mira, we love our old one so much we don’t want to part with it.”

Based on the assumption that the family has used the shower seven-times-a-week, 351-days-a-year to allow for holidays, they reckon it has been used 42,120 time.

If the average shower lasts 10 minutes, it has been provided a whopping 7,020 hours of water flow over the years – and shows no sign of stopping any time soon.

Mira launched the search for the UK’s oldest Mira shower to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the first thermostatic valve.
