A ‘POPULAR’ character who served the people of Pendle in a gas board career spanning four decades has died at home in Greece.

George Kingsbury, who was affectionately known as ‘Gas Board George’, started working for the organisation when he was 18.

The grandad-of-five died on July 29, after being taken ill at home in Afandou, on the Greek island of Rhodes, where he had lived with his partner Mary Barker for five years. He was 64.

Born in Nelson, George went to Bradley School but moved to Barrowford as a teenager.

He lived in Grove Street and, following a brief stint working in a local mill, he took up employment with the gas board, remaining with the company until he retired aged 50.

His daughter Mandy Khan said: “He was very well-known because of his work and because he used to go out a lot – he was very sociable.

“He was very opinionated, but he was genuine and kind and unique – there was only one Gas Board George.”

He leaves children Mandy and Marcus, son-in-law Mark, grandchildren Jordan, Bethany, Ebony, Reuben and Jenson, as well as his partner Mary and special friends Arlene and Glenn.
