CONTROVERSIAL plans to build a new Sainsbury’s supermarket in Todmorden have been thrown out by the local council.
Members of Calderdale Council’s planning committee rejected the application to build a 20,500 sq ft store just off Halifax Road in the town, which would have created around 150 full and part-time jobs.
Councillors turned the application down because of the impact it would have on smaller shops and market traders.
Sainsbury’s will now review the decision before deciding whether to appeal.
