ACCRINGTON Stanley legend Paul Mullin is using his head for figures to help young footballers net financial security.

Paul, who is the Reds all-time leading goalscorer, was forced to call time on his playing days earlier this year because of a persistent back injury.

Returning to his work as an independent financial adviser - the job he did while a semi-professional player earlier in his career - he became the first former professional footballer to be given chartered status in financial planning.

The 37-year-old then joined Pro Sport Wealth Management, a firm set up by ex-Port Vale and Rochdale star Gareth Griffiths and local businessman Phil Rose.

Last Friday Pro Sport Wealth met with Professional Footballers’ Association chief executive Gordon Taylor to put the final touches to a unique deal that will see the trio give financial advice to players up and down the country.

Paul, who is from Burnley, said: “We’ve just got the contract to advise footballers on the Professional Football Association pension scheme.

“We will go round to all the football league clubs, twice a year, speaking to the players about pensions and other financial issues as well.”

Paul, who now lives in Great Harwood, said: “Because of the short career that sports people have they tend to need special advice.

"Most people when they get into their 30s, they see their income reduce.

“You might not see that coming so you have to plan for it.”
