FUNDING of £11million to improve broadband coverage in rural Lancashire has been approved from the government.
The county is one of the national winners in the £294million that is being handed out to English regions.
The cash is part of a £30million bid to improve super-fast broadband in the area.
Lancashire had applied for £13m from this Government pot while a further bid for £16.5m has been put in to the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
Lancashire County Council is leading the project with support from Blackburn with Darwen and Blackpool unitary authorities.
They intend to create a countywide super-fast broadband network by 2014 to help economic recovery and growth.
The councils believe it will stimulate activity in rural areas, increase business productivity and attract investment.
It is hoped that the commercial sector will match the grant cash with a similar amount of financial support.
Other North West counties also received funding, including Cumbria (£17.1m), Cheshire (£3.2m), Greater Manchester (£990,000) and Merseyside (£5.5m).
